Traditional
Tibetan Medicine Traditional
Tibetan Medicine has a history of over 2,000 years. In the
8th century, the Han medicine ("Complete Treatise on
Medicine") was transmitted to Tibet by the two Tang
Princesses Wen-Cheng and Jin-Cheng. Doctors from Tang, India
and Nepal were invited to Tibet. A Tang doctor, Tashi-Donsongonwa
(his Han name was lost), was invited twice to Tibet, and
became famous. The Tibetan saint of medicine, Yutok Yonten
Kongpo was among his pupils. The Tibetan saint traveled
to Tang, Nepal, India, wrote the important "Four Part
Medical Classic" which was considered to be the canon
to this date. In fact this canon had been continuously edited,
modified in the last thousand years, some later Buddhism
influences were obvious during the revival of the Buddhism
in Tibet. Traditional Tibetan medicine is practiced by Tibetan
people generation after generation against natural disasters
and diseases in highland. In the 17 th century, Diba Sangs-gyas
Gya-tsho set up "Mendzi Khang" institute for astronomy
and medicine. He wrote the volumed book "Blue Glaze"
which became a classic. A collection of 79 Thangka about
medicine was commissioned by him which were preserved to
the present. With the unique theoretical system and rich
clinical experience, traditional Tibetan medicine has made
tremendous contributions to public health, especially to
the reproduction of Tibetan ethnic group. In addition, traditional
Tibetan medicine has also formed a complete theoretical
system concerning the growth, classification and properties
of medicinal herbs, as well as prescription and preparation
of herbal medicines. Similar to the Han tradition, a series
of "Materia Medica" ("ben cao" in Han)
were compiled. Ancient medical works such as Tibetan Medical
Code and Four-Volume Medical Code have been collected, translated
and published in China. A New Compendium of Tibetan Medicinal
Herbs and A New Compendium of Tibetan Medicine have also
been published.
Based
on "Materia Medica" ("ben cao" in Han),
thousands of herbal medicines are prescribed. Some of them
are minerals as "Pearl 70," "Coral 25,"
"13 Shades of Gold". Rare traditional Tibetan
medicine "Rannasangpei" twice won gold medals
at the International Conference on Traditional Medicine,
while another medicine "Zuotai" got a state patent.
In 1993, the Ministry of Public Health held a symposium
on Tibetan medicine standards in Lhasa. In 1995, the Department
of State Public Health issued the Tibetan Medicine Standard
Regulation. In the medical scientific approach, Tibet has
laid down standards for 41 kinds of local medicinal herbs
and 97 kinds of Tibetan patent medicines. Of them 12 become
the State protected medicines, and 25 are prescribed under
the State medical insurance coverage.
