Siberian Ginseng (SG) was first listed in Chinese medical literature over 2,000 years ago as a tonic to improve health and strengthen the body and spirit. Recent studies in China and Russian have further validated SG’s energy and immune system boosting capabilities. SG is classified as an adoptogenic, which is defined as:

  1. Innocuous and cause minimal disorders in the physiological function of an organism
  2. Shows a nonspecific action, that is, increases resistance to adverse influences by a wide range of physical, chemical, and biochemical factors.
  3. Exerts a normalizing action irrespective of the direction of the pathologic state

Laboratory animal tests such as exercise to exhaustion, survival rate under a hostile environment (extreme temperatures, pressure, oxygen depletion, toxic chemicals, high energy radiation) have shown improved performance and higher survival rates. These animals also suffered less damaged stomachs and adrenal and thymus glands, which are typically caused by extreme stress.
The stress protecting substance in SG has been identified as glycosides. For SG, these are sugar linked phenolic and coumarinic compounds. Hypothetical mechanisms of SG’s adaptogenic action are through the activation of hypothalamus by SG glycosides. ACTH (adreno-corticotropic hormione) is then released from hypothalamus to adrenals to produce stress steroids to endure the organism in order to counter the harmful conditions. SG glycosides also modulate the activities of the adrenal to protect it from exhaustion.

In China and Russia, SG has been used by people to improve health and stamina, and to reduce sickness. Athletes use it to improve performance and for rapid recovery from intense training. Workers use it to improve efficiency and the quality of work. Astronauts have used it to sustain long periods of space orbiting (such as Vladmir Lyakhov and Valery Rynmin’s record breaking stay in the Salyut-b/Soyut 32 space station).

SG has an even lower level of toxicity than that of Panax Ginseng. The LD50 of SG is 4.7g glycoside/Kg body weight; three times greater than that of Panax Ginseng at 1.4g/Kg body weight. LD50 is defined as the lethal dosage to kill 50% of the tested animals.
